Alternating tread device
The 2018 International Residential Code (IRC), published by the International Code Council (ICC), defines an alternating tread device as: ‘A device that has a series of steps between 50 and 70 degrees (0.87 and 1.22 rad) from horizontal, usually attached to a centre support rail in an alternating manner so that the user does not have both feet on the same level at the same time.’
